Hello, my name is Maggie, and I am starting this blog to share initiatives for sustainable development in Central America and Southern Mexico.

I have worked for different organizations in Nicaragua, Ecuador and Honduras, which focus on education, youth, community-based tourism, and experiential learning. Previously I lived in Nicaragua for 6 years where I worked in different small, local projects.

  • I was a project coordinator at an ecological hotel, La Mariposa, where I coordinated volunteers for reforestation, education, and organic farming projects.

  • I was a site manager for Global Glimpse, an organization that provides scholarships for delegations of US students to travel to Nicaragua for an immersive learning experience. We carried out community development projects and fomented critical thinking about issues in global development.

  • I was a fourth-grade classroom teacher at a bilingual school called Granada International School.

  • I also worked in sustainable, responsible tourism with El Camino Travel which aimed to put tourism dollars directly into local economies and promote community development.

  • Recently in December 2023 I graduated from the Institute of Social Studies with a master’s degree in Development Studies; a major in Agrarian, Food, and Environmental Studies; and a specialization in Local Development Strategies. After studying the importance of sustainable agricultural alternatives, I am eager to explore what they look like in practice!

I believe that sustainable agricultural practices are an important solution to addressing both rural poverty and pressing environmental issues. The work of promoting sustainable farming alternatives is increasingly important for a development trajectory that allows people and the planet to thrive. We can learn from the many impactful initiatives that exist to carry out this important work and have fun doing it :)
